Lithium batteries: what are they and how do they differ from lead batteries?

You hear a lot nowadays about lithium-ion batteries but what are they?

First, what is lithium?

Lithium is a chemical element belonging to the alkali metal family and is the most solid and lightweight of all. Lithium is the substance that allows the operation of batteries, thanks to the ions that make it up.

Secondly, what are lithium batteries?

Lithium batteries are rechargeable devices multiple times, without compromising efficiency. Lithium batteries can store and releasing electricity. This is given by the flow of electrons (electrical current conductors) through two electrodes, one negative (carbon anode) and one positive (metal oxide cathode).

Thirdly, what are lead batteries?

Lead acid batteries are rechargeable batteries formed by a set of cells, composed of lead and sulfuric acid, which produce electricity.

Fourth, if we were to make a comparison between lithium batteries and traditional lead batteries, what would we consider?

  • Compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries are more compact and lighter, and can be recharged several times without decreasing efficiency.
  • Charging a lithium battery has up to 96% efficiency against 75% of traditional batteries.
  • The charging of lithium batteries is faster and can be stopped without damage, unlike lead-acid batteries where interrupted charging leads to damage.
  • Compared to traditional batteries, lithium batteries boast zero maintenance and zero gas production, cutting costs.
  • A lithium battery lasts 75% longer than a lead battery.
  • A lead acid battery has no associated safety device, as opposed to a lithium battery
  • Due to the energy density of lithium batteries, these are at higher risk of inflammation than the traditional ones.
  • For the same energy, lithium batteries are more expensive than traditional batteries.

The differences between the two batteries are many and the ecological transaction will lead us to see around more and more lithium batteries, thanks to their sustainability.
